A new study found that an ingredient in chicken nuggets meat sold in the two tissues popular fast food franchises in the U.S., only 40 to 50 percent . The rest , according to the researchers is " fat , skin , tissue , muscle, blood vessels and bone parts . "
Although edible , ingredients are not a good option , says Dr . Richard deShazo , professor of medicine , pediatric medicine and immunology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where the analysis was performed . Chicken meat is one of the best sources of protein available , said de Shazo , so doctors often encourage patients to eat . " But what happens is , some companies are choosing to use parts of the dough mixture made chicken than chicken white meat low in fat , then fry them and still call it chicken . Fact that the remains of a chicken is high in calories , salt , sugar and fat and very unhealthy . worse yet , it tastes good and the kids love it and are marketed to them , " he said .
National Chicken Council ( NCC ) , a national non-profit trade association representing the U.S. chicken industry says the study only sampled two restaurants , so do not represent billions of nuggets are made every year . Ashley Peterson , vice president of NCC , said NCC members ' use of quality materials and comply with all food safety rules " in making nuggets . " Chicken nuggets are a good source of protein , especially for a child that is difficult to eat , " he said .
